After Father’s unfortunate buggy accident several years ago he was left unable to work. As that Mother (Miss Patricia) was an excellent seamstress, some of the women in our town suggested to her that she open a dress shop. Now, this is quite unusual, as there aren’t many women shopkeepers, but she is so highly respected in town that no one thought anything about it. Well, when war broke out and divided our country, the good men of our town formed up to fight for the cause. However, they were in dire need of uniforms. Well, the wife of the Commanding Officer said to her husband, "What about Miss Patricia. She has made these lovely outfits for me. I am sure that she could make uniforms." So he came to Miss Patricia and inquired as to whether she thought she could manage such a task. "Of course, Sir, anything I can do to help our men, " was her reply. As time passed, the Commanding Officer suggested to Miss Patricia and Father that many merchants, called "sutlers" were following the troops and providing them with supplies. This seemed like a good idea, so Father began to search for tradesmen who could provide us with the necessary goods and we set out on this new adventure. It is hard work; but also satisfying when we know we are able to provide our soldiers with something they may need or just offer them a friendly face and someone other than a fellow soldier to talk to and give them news from home. Oh, and as to why we call Father "the Politician", well, just sit and talk with him for a spell, he’ll tell you all about it. Miss Joni
